Let's go fishing

We suspect WIRES is doing a bit of fishing.

An email received yesterday:

TO SPARTACUS.

Dear Sir, (or is it Madam ?)
After reading a postcard promoting reformwires (sent anonymously) , I went to the site. I scrolled up and down to read some of the comments posted, and then left the site.
Imagine my surprise and anger to receive messages from you, sent to my personal email address.
This is an unacceptable breach of my privacy.
I find it odd coming from people so precious about their own privacy that they post their opinions anonymously.
Do not assume that just because I checked out your site, I am a supporter. In fact, by tracking me down and contacting me directly, you achieved just the opposite.
Please do not contact me again

Our response:

[Name withheld by rw.com],

Firstly, we have not breached your privacy - you're being dramatic and perhaps deliberately outraged.
We got your address details for the postcard from public records including the WIRES annual reports of previous years. We did not use our website logs to make contact with you: We have kept our promise not to use these details.

I don't expect you are a supporter, but again, and I stress, we did not in this instance, and will not ever, use the records from our site to track down anyone. In fact, how do you think we would achieve getting your details? You never left your full name on our site and never gave us your postal address.
As for emails from rw.com:
==================================
This from my email account:
Date: 11-07-2012 22:08
Subject: New subscription to your site!
From: rw.com Newsletter Subscriber
Name: [withheld], Email: [withheld], Wed, 11 Jul 2012 07:08:23 -0400
 ==================================
You were placed on a subscriber list (twice) at 10:08pm on 11/7/12 by someone accessing our website. I emphasise, it was not rw.com who put your details on our mailing list - someone who accessed our site did. Someone obviously, it might even have been you, subscribed to our email notifications and gave your details. I have removed you from our list now.
So, the email contact with you was not unsolicited.
Thanks for your feedback and ongoing support.
S.

It would seem this person deliberately put themsleves on our mailing list and then complained about recieving communications from us. I want to assure you all again that we do not use our website logs (which are very basic) for tracking down anyone.

WIRES uses its members database to send out political protests, and anyone who calls about a rescue gets bombarded with begging letters for years afterwards. So what is the problem with reformwires sending messages to people especially if they ask to be on the mailing list?
I wonder if this person complained to WIRES about being hassled with emails and unsolicited begging letters.

I received a postcard from you and know that other members have too. Just assumed my name is known or was found on council minutes and my address can easily be found in public records.

I think where ever you got names and address's from it's WIRES who should be looking into their obviously lacking security, privacy and confidentuality.
